Sri Lanka 10-day itinerary: where to fit in a safari

The cleanest routes for adding Yala, Udawalawe or Wilpattu to a 10-day Sri Lanka trip without turning the holiday into a road test.

South coast route

If your trip includes Galle, Mirissa or Tangalle, Yala and Udawalawe are the easiest safari choices. Stay near Tissamaharama for Yala or Embilipitiya for Udawalawe.

Do not attempt a dawn safari after arriving late from the other side of the island. Sleep near the park.

Cultural triangle route

If your route is Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy, Minneriya or Kaudulla often fits more naturally than Yala.

Wilpattu can work for travellers heading northwest or wanting a quieter, slower wildlife experience.

Asked before booking

How many nights do you need for a Sri Lanka safari?

Plan at least one night near the park before a dawn drive. Two nights is better if wildlife is a priority.

Which safari park fits a south coast Sri Lanka itinerary?

Yala and Udawalawe are the easiest major wildlife parks to combine with the south coast.
