Leopard gets the attention, but Yala is also sloth bear, elephant, crocodile, deer, hornbills, bee-eaters and patient small moments.

The headline species

Sri Lankan leopard is the animal most travellers come for. Sloth bear is more seasonal and harder to predict, but unforgettable when seen well.

Elephant sightings are possible, though Udawalawe is the more reliable elephant-first park.

What good guides notice

Good guides read alarm calls, deer behaviour, bird movement and tracks. Those small signals often make the difference between driving past a story and understanding one.

Ask your guide what they are watching. A good one will enjoy the question.

Asked before booking

Can you see sloth bear in Yala?

Yes, but sightings are less predictable than leopard and often depend on season, food sources and guide patience.

Is Yala only good for leopards?

No. Yala also has elephants, crocodiles, deer, wild boar, rich birdlife and seasonal sloth bear sightings.
